As many of you know, I love to eat shellfish, then take the shells home in a doggy bag. Recently, I was visiting my father in Florida and had the opportunity to dine on the freshest shellfish daily. Unfortunately, bringing the shells back to his house, then lugging them home on the plane was not an option. Thank goodness I had my handy dandy iPhone camera at the ready! Here's to my model, somewhere in Florida.... You will always be remembered!

Framed in Violet Sunflowers was one of my class demonstrations during an afternoon paint-along session in my Fort Lauderdale, Florida workshop last week. There was a plethora of gorgeous sunflower paintings by the end of the day, and no shortage of fuschia and violet bougainvillea to add some punch to all those golden yellows. I love walking into a workshop first thing in the morning and being blown away by the paintings arrayed on easels throughout the room. Painting loose, painting from life, everyone's paintings are completely, uniquely their own individual creations. Just like people, every flower Mother Nature creates is completely different. We ended our Florida workshop last week with a plein air outing in a beautiful garden in Tamarac on Monday. What a treat to paint under swaying palm trees with cool breezes and sunshine. The owner of this back yard haven stopped by my flower painting class with his chocolate Lab and invited us to paint on Friday, he had heard we were scouting locations in his neighborhood and he was an artist, too! We painted daisies and peach and fuschia bougainvillea in my Fort Lauderdale, Florida, workshop last week. Ladies from New Hampshire, Ontario Canada, Utah, Virginia, New Jersey, Colorado, Michigan and all across Florida converged for palm trees, sunny skies and florals on canvas. Those of us not from Florida shook off the winter chill and put on our super fancy flip flops (the ones with the blingy accessories you can change according to what color your outfit is that day). The artist in particular made sure she got a peddy before embarking on this quest to the sunshine state! Stay tuned to my art blog for more paintings from class, coming up right here on the bloggy!

We painted plein air in a beautiful garden with bougainvillea for the fourth day of my Florida workshop today in 80 degree weather and sunshine, with a little drenching by an unexpected sprinkler or two just to keep things interesting. I'll be sharing pictures of the fruit of our outdoor labors soon, but here are some images from our days in the studio painting first. We ended our week with four paintings, including sunflowers, roses, white hydrangeas, and bougainvillea in fuschia, peach and violet. It was wonderful to have fresh bougainvillea to paint, but watch out for those thorns, they're wicked!
Giving that color some Florida fruit punch!

It was warm and sunny when I landed in Fort Lauderdale this morning, but a Big Ole storm blew in and flapped the palm trees around a few hours later. Nothing like warm wet rain to give you a good soaking, as you recall you forgot your blow dryer and discover the cute little raincoat you are wearing is not waterproof! Fortunately the rain is gone now, since students from Canada, Utah, Texas and across Florida will join me tomorrow for a four day workshop here. We have red tulips, bougainvillea, sunflowers, daisies, and plumbago so stay tuned to see what strikes our fancy on the canvas tomorrow!

I am sad to say farewell today to the Space Coast, the warm sun, the full moon over the ocean, and a classroom filled with talented, funny, delightful students who are so lucky to live in this charmed place. It's no wonder my students were so good natured, I'd be smiling, too, if I lived in a place where the beaches were warm and the palm trees grew like weeds everywhere you look.
As my workshop hostess gave me a tour of her town, I had the funniest sensation I had been there before, though I knew I had never been there. Have you ever had that happen? I told her I had dreamed when I was a little girl of living in a little pink house on the beach. She said there was a line of little pink houses just up the road, right on the beach, not far from where we were. We didn't get a chance to find the pink house of my dreams, but maybe that's all for the good. I'm still holding onto that dream! I'm sad to say goodbye to Florida, but excited to return to San Diego in just a few weeks for my workshop in Balboa Park. West Coat friends, I hope to see you there!

What a treat to teach my first workshop in Florida this week. With a room full of talented artists, perfect weather with a hint of ocean breezes, two jars of chocolate within reach at all times (one dark, one milk), it's hard to imagine what could make this better. Thanks so much to Lynda for bringing in an armful of beautiful plants from her garden this morning, we featured her Mexican sunflowers and blue plumbago in the class demonstration today. Tomorrow we paint daisies and pumpkins so stay tuned to my art blog for more color to come!

Summer Rain Pink Roses is the newest daily painting in Flower Mound Studio, as I pack up paint and brushes for a demonstration for the Trinity Arts Guild in Bedford, Texas this week for their final meeting before summer break. This is a weekend for graduations and celebrations, and I admit I'm a bit excited knowing this will be my first summer as a full-time artist and art teacher. I'll have some exciting announcements in my art newsletter this week with workshops coming up in Fort Lauderdale, Florida, and San Diego, California, so stay tuned for all the flower news fit to print!
