French Dream Tulips and a North Texas Workshop - Flower Paintings by Nancy Medina

 French Dream White Tulips

Class Demonstration

French Dream White Tulips was one of my six classroom demonstrations in my final workshop of hte year. It's likely a symptom of pre-menopause, that just thinking about this being the last workshop of the year made me a little sniffley and teary-eyed at the easel! Fortunately I held it together long enough to help devour the French picnic lunch we had today, courtesy of my chef husband Carlos, and the cherry cheesecake also helped assuage the tears! What a fabulous year it has been, thanks to my gracious and oh so talented and inspiring students and collectors, and art friends from around the world. I hope each of you has a beautiful, incredibly blessed holiday season! Rest, relax, and surround yourselves with color, flowers, friends, family, four-footed babies, and all that you love! The new year is just days away! Next stop - Orlando, Florida!

Holiday Pink Peonies was one of my class demonstrations in North Texas today. Tomorrow we paint French landscapes - oo la la! I can hardly wait, since this also happens to be my end of year party, everyone in class is going to get a big surprise! The handsome Frenchman has agreed to come to serve us lunch. I'm going to be sure he wears a beret, too, whether he likes it or not! (he is my husband, do you think anyone will notice he is Hispanic rather than French?) Here are a few important things we learned in class today:

  • Eating eight mini cupcakes is equal to less than half of one traditional sized cupcake
  • When teacher eats 8 cupcakes in class, everyone agrees NOT to tell teacher's husband
  • Women need the thermostat set at a balmy 50 degrees year-round please and thank you
  • If you proclaim you NEVER win anything, the WINNER sticker will be on the bottom of your chair

Thanks to Mother Nature (and the market)
for giving us these fresh flowers today!

For someone who spent almost a decade living in California, it's a bit embarrassing to admit I never visited one of the most famous places, the wine country of Sonoma. That's one reason I'm so excited to be teaching a workshop there next spring, strategically scheduled for the height of the local flower bloom season! I can hardly wait to share photos with you from my trip, so I'll be marking off the days on my calendar until then. Just a week after Sonoma, I'm heading to Tuscany, Italy to teach during the height of poppy bloom season. What a lucky duck I am, to have this job as an art teacher with my own art business, and I'm not just saying that because every day is casual day, either...! You are invited to join me for the painting getaway of your dreams. Put a little joy in your brush and let's make brilliant flowers bloom together next Spring!

Poppy Tango is part of a new painting video in production, as a double feature with a pansy painting lesson, and will be available early next year (or sooner we can hope!). The first 10 people to respond by emailing me at nancy@nancymedina.com AFTER the announcement is posted next week will be invited to join me for one day absolutely FREE to paint in North Texas at the Jaycee Parks Center for the Arts in Irving, Texas.

What REALLY goes on behind the scenes during a flower painting video? I'm sure this questions has kept you up many, many nights. Blue Rain Bluebonnets is a new commission under construction in Flower Mound Studio tonight. I was asked to really punch up some color in this painting, so I hope the new owner likes bright violets and blues! This weekend I head to the Dallas Arboretum for my final workshop of the year in the gardens, one of my friends who works there has taken the plunge and is going to take the workshop as a bran new painter. I work with new painters step by step, showing them how to set up their palettes and use their tools, so I'm excited to introduce her to the world of bright color in oils. There are only 2 seats left, and I've saved a Dallas Arboretum pumpkin with your name on it mon cher!  You are cordially invited to join me there Saturday for my only one-day workshop! Read more...

Night Shine Stargazer Lily - Flower Paintings by Nancy Medina

  Night Shine Stargazer
by Nancy Medina

I couldn't bear to leave the studio this week without painting these fresh stargazers at least one more time. If there is any color that sings to me lately, it has been fuschia-pink! People ask me if I have a favorite flower, and really for me, it's about a favorite color, and my color moods swing through different spectrums at different times. I'm sure this is all tied to biorhythms, hormones, whether Venus is aligned with Mars, or if I've run out of Dove chocolate, for sure. This weekend we'll be painting yellow tulips, red roses and white hydrangeas in my Spring, Texas workshop. Don't be surprised if I come home with a new vase or three, all those cute little boutiques and gift shops within walking distance of the Gallery will be calling my name!

You Know You're in France When - Flower Paintings by Nancy Medina

Wild Abandon Sunflower II
by Nancy Medina
12X16
Oil on Archival Panel

My French sojourn continues, and I have lost count of the days. I no longer know what day of the week it is, nor how many days until time to return home. Time is marked by the ringing of the church bells just down the lane. Each day begins with breakfast plates filled with warm croissants and homemade plum jelly from the trees near the hollyhock garden, eggs, fruit, and other treats. Instead of trips to the gym, my workout consists of scooting myself and my paint brushes from the patio table (when the sun encroaches upon my perfect perch) to a rose garden bench, or to the stone grotto surrounded by sunflowers. Each day is like a gift, with trips to neighboring markets and medieval villages for shopping, sketching, and exploring. In the meantime, I've begun to recognize the signs that clearly indicate this Texas gal is no longer in the Big D!

Here are a few signs that you, too, might just be in France this week....read more...

Heart's Wish Sunfowers - Flower Paintings by Nancy Medina

Heart's Wish Sunflowers
by Nancy Medina

My new DVD

Heart's Wish Sunflowers is the newest painting in Flower Mound Studio. Someone asked the other day why I always have flowers on the tabletop. I love the natural feel of a flower garden, especially after some time has passed and the flowers and petals have fallen and scattered. I think this is nature's way of decorating her own landscape.

Cherry Jubilee Daisies and Painting From a Place of Joy - Flower Paintings by Nancy Medina

Class Demonstration

My new DVD

Cherry Jubilee Daisies was my class demonstration this morning in my North Texas workshop. Every student in class stretched their wings and created daisies in their own style, such is the fruit of painting from life rather than photographs or patterns. The most direct path to your own style will come when you transition away from painting from photographs, and graduate to painting from life. But there is another element to consider before we are ready to really cut loose with color - read more...

Strawberry Souffle Red Rose Bouquet and a North Texas Workshop - Flower Paintings by Nancy Medina

http://nancymedina.fineartstudioonline.com/workszoom/1537169

Strawberry Souffle Red Rose Bouquet
by Nancy Medina
20X16
Oil on Archival Panel

My new DVD

We made red roses bloom in oils in North Texas today, with students from Arkansas, California, New Mexico, and across Texas. Working with big brushes and abstracting shapes, and pushing bright color to the extreme was the lesson plan, and judging from the smiles, it was a productive morning! Tomorrow we will paint a familiar subject - daisies - with a new twist - a HOT PINK backdrop. Stay tuned for more photos, flower friends. If you get to class early, I might even save you a...brownie! Visit my art blog for a peek at the flower construction zone in progress....

Yes, Virginia, There Is a Flower Mound - Flower Paintings by Nancy Medina

Flower Mound Trail
by Nancy Medina
14X14
Oil on Gallery Wrap Canvas

My new DVD

Flower Mound, Texas, really is a place, it's a real town with a population of about 60,000, situated somewhere near the mid-point between Fort Worth and Dallas. Flower Mound is named for an Indian burial mound in the center of town.

I love this little town we live in, we have hundreds of miles of bike trails, sanctuary neighborhoods, and almost every type of shopping we need right close by. This is a painting of one of the trails just up the street from Flower Mound Art Studio, around the corner from the duck pond. I can walk out my front door and be in this spot in about 15 minutes. The flowers are done for the summer, but in the spring in the no mow zones, the wildflowers bloom in brilliant yellows, pinks and reds, and creeks this summer were full of running water. I wouldn't trade my neighborhood for any other place in Texas!

Eucalyptus and Daisies - Flower Paintings by Nancy Medina

 Eucalyptus and Daisies
by Nancy Medina
20X16
Oil on Archival Panel

My new DVD

Eucalyptus and Daisies was one of my class demonstrations in San Diego last week, starring my favorite little sugar bowl and a borrowed vase from a friend. I love the sugar bowl so much (purchased from Hobby Lobby with my half price coupon!) I actually bought two of these little guys, in case one ever gets broken en route to a workshop. In my demo painting, I wanted to give the white pitcher minimal frills, so it would not attract too much attention from the daisies, and I chose the eucalyptus greenery deliberately because I knew the cool teal greens would set off the hot pink flowers. I always try to find ways to be a little strategic in setting up my arrangements, and lots of these tips are shared on my new art DVDs. I have one seat left in my November San Diego class, and this will be my last marketing class so I sure hope to see you there! Read more...

No 102 Five Red Flowers, Flower Paintings by Texas Artist Laurie Pace

no 102 Five Red Flowers
©+Laurie Pace       Graphics One Design 2014

 Size:30 x 30  Oil on Canvas.Sold

I have a deep love for roses. Pretty sure they are wrapped up in my soul along with my horses that I paint. Terry plants roses for me all the time and vases are filled throughout my house with new clippings for each new day. I have roses of every color and every scent. The bushes are chosen by the scent the roses bare. Hoping this day you will enjoy this abstract rose painting.

May your unfailing love be my comfort,
according to your promise to your servant. Psalm 119:76
