Fond Farewell to Summer by Pamela Blaies

Red Pears

12" x 9"

Today is officially the end of summer for the Blaies household. I will miss having the kids around and enjoying the carefree days. But it will be nice to have more time to myself in the studio. Here is my newest painting "Red Pears."

Baby It's Grand by Pamela Blaies

Baby It's Grand
6" x 6"
oil on linen

I'm so excited to be the new owner of a grand piano built in 1949 - just delivered last week! The north light coming in from these windows is gorgeous, so I set up in the living room today to do a quick study. I love the drama of the bright light juxtaposed with the shadows of the ebony black piano. I have a feeling this piano will be a part of many more paintings in the future.

Art, Love and Roses by Pamela Blaies

Keepsake
12" x 9"
SOLD

A romantic collector purchased Keepsake this week as a gift for his lucky wife of 38 years.  He shared with me that upon opening the box, she cried - in a good way!  I was very touched by this story.  Recently another collector gifted his wife a painting of red roses, Be Mine, and he also shared the wonderful "reveal" story with me.  Art has a special way of touching others which is so exciting to experience from my perspective, as the artist.  Art, love and roses...a beautiful combination!

The Best Part of Being an Artist by Pamela Blaies

Sunrise Reflections
oil on linen
SOLD

I enjoyed Bayou City Art Festival Memorial Park 2014! It's always great to visit Houston to catch up with some of my longtime collectors and meet lots of art lovers. But with all of the preparation and travel involved, I've been unable to spend any time in the studio for the past couple of weeks. Time to get back to the best part of being an artist....creating!

Warm Glow

I'm thrilled that my painting, Warm Glow, was accepted into the Oil Painters of America 2014 National Juried Exhibition of Traditional Oils. This year it will be held at the Bennington Center for the Arts in Bennington, Vermont. On display during the months of June and July, it will be a great time to visit Vermont and enjoy what I know will be a beautiful exhibit to see!

Painting Demonstration Initiation by Pamela Blaies

Pears and Winter Berries
6" x 6"
oil on linen

My doctor calls it an upper respiratory infection - I call it "the crud." Whatever it's name is, it sure has been slowing me down for the past week. I hope to recuperate before Monday night, February 24th, when I will be doing my first live painting demonstration in front of an audience. It starts at 7 pm at the Firehouse Gallery in Weatherford, Texas. The address is 119 Palo Pinto, Weatherford, Texas. I am excited and a little anxious. But it should be fun and I'd love to see you there!

Warmth on a Cold Day by Pamela Blaies

Warm Glow
18" x 14"
oil on linen

Painting light and air around these objects gave this whole composition a warm glow. I had an intentional purpose in exaggerating the light and reflections around the orange. I wanted to make sure the edges of the metal pitcher right up against the dark of the background drew the eye into the focal point, but didn't steal the focus. I love the drama it created of intense light. After I finished up the painting, I had to get out to run some errands and it was cold! Below freezing. I wanted to be back in my cozy studio in front of the "warm glow."  Hope you are all keeping warm!

Inspired by Pamela Blaies

Orange Reflections
12" x 16"
oil on linen

I went to see the Sorolla exhibit at the Meadows Museum in Dallas yesterday with some artist friends. He was a very prolific artist during the late 1800s and early 1900s and painted hundreds of large (like climb-on-a-ladder-and-tape-your-brushes-to-long-sticks large) paintings! I've seen many of Sorolla's paintings in books, but seeing a photograph is nothing compared to the amazing experience of viewing his work in person. His use of color temperature to create light was fabulous. But I think what was most interesting to me was his thick, juicy strokes and loose brushwork. I found myself standing up close to study each stroke, then backing away to see the overall effect over and over again with each painting.

Looking Forward to 2014 by Pamela Blaies

September Reflections
20" x 16"
oil on linen

Taking a break from the studio to spend time with my family over the Christmas holidays has been rejuvenating. It may seem a little early to begin thinking about spring, but I'm already getting excited about planning my schedule. I received invitations to exhibit in the Bayou City Art Festival Memorial Park in Houston, Texas and Southlake Art in the Square and I'm thrilled. They both rank at the top of the list of the best fine art festivals in the United States. I'll be participating in a few group exhibits this spring as well. Looking forward to the new year!

Don't Go Through Life, Grow Through Life by Pamela Blaies

One Pink Rose and a Ginger Jar
9" x 12"
oil on linen

I just returned home from attending a workshop with Quiang Huang. He is a fantastic painter and teacher. His workshop was fun and he did several demos. I picked up so much just from observing his technique, use of color and attention to value and temperature. The more I learn about color, composition and value, the more I see how the infinite ideas and possibilities will take more than a lifetime for me to explore. Here is a piece I painted this afternoon.

It's beginning to look a lot like Christmas...by Pamela Blaies

He Knows My Favorite Color
oil on linen
SOLD

OK - so the weather here in Texas isn't snowy, yet. But while shopping over the weekend, it was nice to hear Christmas music piping through the speakers, then more Christmas music in the car on the way home. I am excited that the Christmas season is upon us. I am also very happy to share that the painting "He Knows My Favorite Color" found a new home this past weekend!

Happy Anniversary to Me! by Pamela Blaies

Polished Silver Shine
18" x 14"
oil on linen

Today is my wedding anniversary of 16 years! My sweetheart is a great husband and father. Without his support, I would never be able to survive this crazy artist life! I'm thankful for him every day.

Here is a brand new painting I just finished yesterday. I enjoyed the challenge of creating atmosphere around the pitcher to make the freshly polished silver pitcher shine right off the canvas.

Back to School Bliss by Pamela Blaies

I'm a little behind on posting my new artwork. With the "back to school" chaos going on, I have been creating, but there does not seem to be much time left over for photographing, displaying and blogging. Now that the first day of school has come and gone, I'm ready to get back to my daily routine. Here is a piece that I did a few weeks ago while on vacation in San Antonio. It has a loose, abstract-ish feel that I adore! I want to see more of this in all of my paintings.

Up for Auction by Pamela Blaies

Click the photo to check out the auctions for these two Petite Paintings full of light and color. The Coneflowers were cut from a new flower garden I planted just this summer. These would look great hanging together as a pair.

Happy Homecoming by Pamela Blaies

Scarlet Ribbon
7" x 5"
oil on linen

A beach in Mexico with my love and a cabin on the lake in Missouri with the family. Just returned home this week from a few weeks of travelling where I forced myself to relax and take a break from painting. Almost like art withdrawals after painting daily for several months. I was happy to return home, get back in the studio and see that Scarlett Ribbon received a FAV15 jury award for June! Check out the August Entry HERE.

New Video Demo by Pamela Blaies

8" x 8"
oil on linen panel

So excited to be chosen as Daily Paintworks' Facebook Pic of the Day!

Click HERE to watch the video demo of this piece.

My videos are proof that out of the hours I spend on creating a piece of artwork, only a small fraction of time is spent with the brush actually on the canvas. I do a lot of intently looking at my subject, standing back to look at my work and and one of the most important steps....drinking coffee:) This was probably around Petite Painting #15, but I saved it to post until after the video was completed. Hope you enjoy!

Teacups by Pamela Blaies

5" x 7"
oil on linen panel

There is something about the shape of a teacup that draws me to it. I like the way the light reflects and shadows are thrown into and around the cup. Of course, I also love tea!
