Demonstration Preparation by Pamela Blaies

An Orange and a Silver Pitcher Study

I'm finally starting to recover from "the crud." It is nice to be feeling better. Painting this study of an orange and a silver pitcher yesterday was just the way to get warmed up for the painting demonstration I will be doing for the Weatherford Art Association on Monday evening. I'll have less than an hour to paint so it should be fun to watch! Come on out if you are around the area. It will be at the Firehouse Gallery, 119 Palo Pinto, Weatherford, Texas, starting around 7 pm.

Warmth on a Cold Day by Pamela Blaies

Warm Glow

Painting light and air around these objects gave this whole composition a warm glow. I had an intentional purpose in exaggerating the light and reflections around the orange. I wanted to make sure the edges of the metal pitcher right up against the dark of the background drew the eye into the focal point, but didn't steal the focus. I love the drama it created of intense light. After I finished up the painting, I had to get out to run some errands and it was cold! Below freezing. I wanted to be back in my cozy studio in front of the "warm glow."  Hope you are all keeping warm!

Process in Reverse by Pamela Blaies

I usually do small studies before painting a larger piece, but this time my process got all turned around. As I set out my composition, intending to focus only on a couple of pieces of fruit, the still life just seemed to put itself together inviting me to create the larger painting, In Season. I liked the colors and light so much, I left the composition right were it was overnight and painted two Petites (6" x 6") the next day. Fun!

Green Grapes

The elegant shape of this bunch of grapes is what drew me to them. The long stem just adds to the charm. I challenged myself to find the right balance between detail and abstraction so that they would remain convincing, but not too literal. Starting with a large flat bristle brush (size 10), I painted an abstract underpainting - pretty much simple color shapes. Right away I could tell I liked the flow of the shapes on the canvas. I went to a size 6 mongoose flat brush and added a little more detail, being careful to step back often to see it from afar. Then I got my knife out to work on the stem and highlights. Such a simple composition, but it is probably my favorite piece this month!  BTW - I translate KISS as "Keep it Simple Silly" stupid is a bad word in our house:)

I am excited to announce that my Petite Painting Project - 100 Paintings in 100 Days is almost complete.  In celebration of posting the 99th Petite Painting, I am putting "Citrus and a Mason Jar" up for auction today with a petite starting bid of just $99.  This painting is all about reflections and light. Citrus colors add warmth to the cool composition.

I've been intrigued lately with these little Granny Smith apples I found at the market. I love their color and that they are so shiny and polished that they catch the light fabulously. I love to paint cherries, but had a hard time getting my hands on any to paint over the winter and spring. The other day I was so excited when I found them at the market. I promptly bought 2 bags - one to eat and one to paint. Then I went on a little cherry painting binge.
