I Stand Alone Poppy, by Melissa A. Torres, 8x8 oil on canvas

I finally was able to use my wonderful Christmas gift, a Nikon camera, to take photos of something other than my paintings this week. On a short trip to Wildseed Farms in Fredericksburg, TX, I took lots of photos of beautiful poppies including this one.  What a great trip it was, spending 3 days in a workshop by Nancy Medina, with the evenings free to explore the wineries and restaurants of this beautiful little town which I love so much. It was nice to get out of San Antonio for a few days of painting and R&R.

This was the first painting on my own in oils after attending the workshop. It was interesting to use elements I learned at the workshop while applying them to my own style of painting. I made a conscious decision not to spend too much time on this one and not use as much detail as I normally do. I have already noticed a change in how I hold my brush.

Three's a Crowd, by Melissa A. Torres, 14x18 oil on canvas

Taking a break from working on my new website and managing to finish some paintings I started.

I love, love Poppies. My favorite flower by far, and my most painted. Here is the latest. I started this on over a month ago, but had to take a break to work on a couple of commissions that had tight deadlines. This canvas is about 1.5 inches deep. The blue/green colors continue onto the sides. I used A LOT of paint on this one, and a lot of texture.

Flowers and Butterflies, by Melissa A. Torres, 16x20 acrylics on canvas

This background for this was created using rubbing alcohol. I first laid down dark blues, then began adding lighter blues, greens, and gold, adding rubbing alcohol to dilute layers of paint. I dripped the alcohol on straight from the bottle.

This piece is available at my Etsy shop. Thank you!

Poppies, by Melissa A. Torres, 12x9 acrylic on canvas

I love Poppies. They are my favorite flower.  I chose this background color because it was a dreary winter day when I painted this, but with the bright colors of the flowers, it made my day much nicer.

Enjoy.

Spring Formal Pink and Red Poppies by Texas Flower Artist Nancy Medina

Spring Formal Pink and Red Poppy Field
by Nancy Medina
16X20
Oil on Archival Panel

I felt the need to step out of the studio and into the fields today, and painted Spring Formal Pink and Red Poppies based on the bobbing and dipping fields of flowers in Fredericksburg, Texas. The weather was clear, cool and absolutely gorgeous in Flower Mound, Texas. Studio Director AnnieBee bossed me away from the easel on at least four occasions to throw her toy du jour. After a busy morning of packing and shipping paintings, it was nice to have a few moments in the garden to sit, breathe, relax, and share quiet time with my pugs. I wanted to share that time with you, too, with a photo of a surprise from my garden this morning. The rest of its brethren seem spent for the season, but this morning the one, glorious white lady stood tall among the red roses.
