Father's Day with the Blaies family was spent with my wonderful husband, who is a great dad!  In the afternoon we headed out to the pool where he enjoyed a cigar, the kids swam and I did a sketching exercise.  I laid in quick value drawings with a brush and Burnt Sienna, then wiped them off over and over again.  Read more tips about this painting exercise and see some step-by-step photos...

Impressions of Beauty by Pamela Blaies

Classic Beauty

Classic Beauty was a fun one to paint. I especially enjoyed loosely rendering the blond hair knot gleaming in the light. I almost titled this petite Silver Drop because of the brilliant earring. But what inspired me to paint this was the simple elegance of the overall impression and not one thing. Classic Beauty seemed fitting.

In the Moment by Pamela Blaies

Dauntless Allure
oil on linen
6" x 6"

This painting was inspired by a hostess on the Riverwalk in San Antonio. We were having lunch at the restaurant she worked. Her expression and the way the light was hitting her just took my breath away. I snapped a few photos. I went and asked her if she minded that I took her photo for future artwork. She seemed flattered and happily consented, but her expression changed from self assured confidence to bashful awkwardness. Thank goodness I got the photos I wanted before she was aware of being photographed. It is exciting to capture a moment!
