Don't Go Through Life, Grow Through Life by Pamela Blaies

One Pink Rose and a Ginger Jar
9" x 12"
oil on linen

I just returned home from attending a workshop with Quiang Huang. He is a fantastic painter and teacher. His workshop was fun and he did several demos. I picked up so much just from observing his technique, use of color and attention to value and temperature. The more I learn about color, composition and value, the more I see how the infinite ideas and possibilities will take more than a lifetime for me to explore. Here is a piece I painted this afternoon.

Yesterday's Rose by Pamela Blaies

6" x 6"
oil on linen panel

I cut this rose to paint a little while ago, but didn't get to it that day. Today, I decided I wanted to put it in my composition. Alas, it was to pooped to party and began dropping petals left and right. I still loved its graceful shape and decided the fading beauty was the heart of this little piece.

Carving out Time for Me by Pamela Blaies

6" x 6"
oil on linen panel

I had a thousand things going yesterday, so it was tough to carve out time to paint, but I was determined. I headed to my studio, turned off all of the phones and felt like I was entering a spa. As I listened to music, the composition seemed to put itself together. I used a lot of paint and intentionally kept my brushstrokes loose. With my palette knife I gave juicy highlights to the lemons and sharp reflections on the cup with gold trim. This has turned out to be one of my favorites, it feels fresh and full of color and light.

Taking Time to Smell the Roses by Pamela Blaies

6" x 6"
oil on panel
SOLD

This sweet rose came from an old-fashioned climbing rose I have growing on my fence. Over the past few days it has been filled with tons of beautiful, sweet pink roses. I brought an armload in to enjoy, they have a beautiful scent that has filled my studio. I hope to paint several paintings of them, because I know I won't get the chance again until next year. This piece is sold, but if you love antique roses as much as I do, keep checking because there will be more!
