Queen For The Day..Pastel..Texas Artist..Rae Andrews

This is the completed demo I began last week for the Brenham Arts League here in Texas.

I possibly spent only 30 minutes on the actual demo as I had already done a longer one and time was short.

This image is on white velour paper.

The steps of this are below..

I like to work a lot of negative painting into my background first, and the flower/s evolve as the painting progresses.

I did not pre draw to begin with, merely used 'VEILS' of pastel marks over the surface first to disturb the surface tension.

After this I referred to my photo of a flower and sketched a little over these marks to give me a 'road map' of a flower so to speak.

I like movement in my works, and not sticking to a plan, just allowing the painting to tell me what it wants to do.

Here are the steps.
This image is a pastel on velour paper (unframed)
19.5" x 25.5"
$550 plus S/H

Neptune’s Court..Watermedia..Texas Artist..Rae Andrews

NEPTUNE'S COURT began in a recent abstract workshop I took with Mary Ann Beckwith.

Lots of paint flying everywhere, textures and creativity.

I had just a big sheet of this Yupo (manufactured paper) covered in implied textures, very pretty, but now what?

The paint always GLOWS on Yupo, and yes, this is mostly WATERCOLOR with some acrylic GESSO over parts, NO INK is used, although I bet some of you thought I had used INK..
Anyway....

I love a challenge.

Pretty as my start was with patterns made by stamping objects or cloth into and over paint, I feel we as artists, should not rely on that alone. It's a trap.. and many artists deem a painting finished before they truly have done much of their own 'pulling together'.

The challenge is making A PAINTING out of all of this lusciousness.

For days now I have gone back and forth with this, breaking objects into the patterns I made, losing and diminishing the importance of my implied textures, to make my AQUATIC shapes evolve.

It takes a LOT of thought, and I constantly turned this around to show all angles before I decided on this vertical format. The painting actually works okay with most angles though.

I hope you like my result.

                                            This image is 21.5" x 30" unframed

                                                               $550 plus S/H

New "Floating Expressions" Series Aspen Tree Paintings by Niki Gulley

"Floating Expressions III" ©2017 Niki Gulley
24" x 24" textured mixed media painting on wrap around canvas

In this painting series, I wanted the focus to be on texture. Usually I paint with a lot of color, but I opted to use a limited palette on these pieces to really concentrate on the peeling bark of the aspen trees. Bordering on the edge of abstraction and the cusp of realism, Floating Expressions is loaded with layers and layers of paint, built up with thin glazes and then palette knife to create extreme dimension. Choosing to come in extremely close on the subject, I played around with various strokes and paint thicknesses to add depth and energy. At the end, I had to throw in a few of my signature strokes of color – a splash of gold, some touches of purple, and just a dab of fire-engine red for added excitement and unexpected color twists.

Majesty Sublime..Pastel..Texas Artist..Rae Andrews

MAJESTY SUBLIME was started yesterday as a demo for the Brenham Arts League.

What a lovely audience I had, and it was a pleasure having such an eager participation for my demonstration. Thank you all so much.

I worked more on this today just to complete the image, although I had a good start at the demo, it was just not a 'home run' quite yet.

I think it's okay now, I will live with it a day or so and see how I feel.

This image is on Sennelier sanded paper (a dark green I believe)

It is unframed and measures 19.5" x 25.5"

                                                                $525 plus S/H

Just sold! Standing tall and proud, this old soul sinks its gnarly roots into the cliff below, persistent and hopeful. I wanted you to get the feeling of staring up in wonderment like when you were a kid discovering things for the first time – noticing the unusual beauty and complexity of its infrastructure. Chasm Interrupted..Pastel..Texas Artist..Rae Andrews

I am on a roll with these abstracts now, hope you are not sick of them.
This one was a challenge..

As you will see from the step by step page below, it began as a full sheet of Sennelier paper on which I had done a quick demo for an art group years ago.

I am going through all my old filed paintings and reconstructing them. I hate to waste this wonderful substrate.

So...  I first turned the old demo upside down before deciding to cut the paper in half vertically.

I find if I view an old image upside down first it changes my perspective on that piece, and I begin to see possibilities for another painting.

This one, as with my previous posts, changed a great deal throughout the process of painting it. I could easily have gone with a horizontal format, but in the end, decided on this vertical.
I am constantly rotating the work as I paint.

This image is 10" x 25.5" unframed
$350 plus S/H

Mantled Epoch..Pastel..Texas Artist..Rae Andrews

Mantled Epoch is cut from the same paper as the previous post. I am glad I stuck with this set of abstracts, always a little worrying to rely on one's design sense, but I do love that 'angst' in my art.

I began (after I had cut the full sheet in half as with my previous painting) by turning the remaining 'demo' image upside down.

As I worked by blocking in some hefty darks, I rotated every few minutes, and kept doing that till I settled on a pleasing composition.

Just by rotating the piece as I progressed, I saw so many opportunities evolve. Each rotation looked so different, and the focus became a different area of the painting.

I had a hard time, as with my previous post, to finally decide which rotation pleased me the most.
Eventually it was this one.

See the process of my thinking below, remember I had no reference with any of these abstracts, I just 'went with the flow' so to speak (pun intended).

This piece is 13" x 19" unframed
It is a pastel on red Sennelier paper.

$350 plus S/H

Cavernos Tumble..Pastel..Texas Artist..Rae Andrews

This painting started as a demo start, only partly done, and I did not want to toss the great paper.

It was a full sheet of reddish  Sennelier paper, which I turned upside down and cut in half so I have two pieces I can work on. (there will be another painting coming up soon from this paper)

I liked the color contrast in the demo, so just went with it.

I wanted to abstract my image (though) and after my France workshop last May and a visit to some amazing caves, I felt this image could be an 'echo' of that .

See all the steps below, to better explain.

This image is 13" x 19.5" unframed

$350 plus S/H

Prints of this image are also available through Fine Art America:

Below is a little on the thoughts behind my process.

As a finished painting the sheet directly below shows the image in all directions. I could still change my mind on this, it's an easy thing to erase my signature and place it elsewhere if I decided to perhaps go with a vertical format, I will have to live with my chosen top image for a few days and see how I feel.

The sheet below is my whole thought process throughout this painting. From an old demo partly done on a full sheet/cut in half/turned upside down/ and then gradually working around the shapes in a new painting.

"Villa with a View," Lake Como, Italy oil painting by Niki Gulley

"Villa with a View" ©2014 Niki Gulley • 12" x 9" oil painting • SOLD

Cinque Terre and Lake Como Art Trek with Niki Gulley and Scott Williams
Day 7, afternoon location: Villa Babianello

Just Sold! After a busy schedule the day before, several of us opted to take it easy and join a cooking class while others visited the castle in town and one of the villages across the lake. We were whisked away to a tiny nearby hamlet where the chef, Moreno, prepares all of the dishes himself that he serves for dinner at his restaurant. He started the morning out by feeding us cappuccino and homemade cake to enjoy while he began showing us how to roll out and form pasta for cheese tortellini and marinara from scratch. Next up, was a decadent potatoes gruyere with ham slices, all of which we got to sample. The finalĂ© was the creamiest mushroom risotto, local red wine, and don't forget the limoncello for dessert. Yum!

Late that afternoon, we visited the Botanic garden in Varenna, which is spectacular with its colorful tropical plantings, elaborate villa, sculptures and fountains, and fantastic views along the lake. What a great day!

Above, Below and Beyond..Pastel..Texas Artist..Rae Andrews

I decided to pastel over a very banal tree landscape I had done in a quick demo years ago.

I have just attended an abstract workshop and I guess that is still n my mind, even though it was a watercolor workshop.

I needed a break away from pretty landscapes, and this is what I came up with.

Totally intuitive, no preconceived plan.

I did this on Sennelier paper in pastels.

It measures 11.25" x 25.5" unframed

$350 plus S/H

I am also posting my decision planning on the rotation of this design, I was pleased with it in every position actually, but decided on the above.

See what you all think, do you agree?

Trail Shadows..Watercolor..Texas Artist..Rae Andrews

I am sorry I have not posted in a few days, I was attending a fun workshop with Mary Ann Beckwith..

I think there will be a few abstracts coming up in my future posts.. She LOVES color as do I, and I was enthralled with our daily fun!
I have a lot of unfinished pieces I need to complete, so keep an eye out..

However, this painting was one I had almost finished prior to that workshop, and I just made a few changes on it today ready to post.

It's a watercolor on Arches paper unframed.

Tuscan Vineyard Palette Knife Oil Painting by Contemporary Impressionist Niki Gulley

SOLD • 48" x 60" textured oil painting

I was recently commissioned to paint this vineyard scene set against miles of rolling hills dotted with grapevines and olive trees. Working from some of my plein air sketches, photographs, and personal memories from our trips to the area, I created this large textured oil painting with palette knives and tons of paint. Full of color and movement, I arranged the planted grapevines to lead your eye back to the Tuscan villa and then to the beautiful countryside beyond.

If you would like to come along on one of our upcoming Plein Air Painting / Photography Workshops to Tuscany, Italy in September or Cinque Terre / Lake Como, Italy in September visit ArtTreks.org for more information. We'd love to have you join us!

New "Visions of Blue III" Palette Knife Bluebonnet Painting by Texas Artist Niki Gulley

"Visions of Blue III," Texas Hill Country ©2017 Niki Gulley
24" x 12" textured oil painting

I painted these Texas Bluebonnets and wildflowers with extremely thick oil paint and palette knives to achieve depth and texture. The resulting image comes to life and is loaded with color and energy. In this vertical wildflower series, I've framed the paintings in espresso floater frames so that you can still see the textured oil paint continuing around the edges of the canvas. These Texas wildflowers look great hung alone or in a grouping with the rest of the "Visions of Blue" series, too!
