SPRING BOUQUETS by Linda Popple

SPRING BOUQUET 2

Oil on Panel

These paintings were accepted into Dutch Gallery's "Spring Reflections", their spring juried show.  The second painting was abstracted from the first one and although I enjoyed painting both of them I have to say the abstract was more fun.  The show runs from May14 to July 16.  If you are in the Dallas area stop in and see some great art.

I had a blast painting these flowers!  I don't know what kind of flowers they are.  The tag said "stock."  Their fragrance filled my studio, which was amazing.  Don't you love having fresh flowers in the house?  It is such a treat!

I continue to work on three larger pieces and they are coming along.  I have to say that there still is a struggle, but it is lessening with each day and I am now looking forward to each challenge that comes my way.  I'm learning so much.  Happy, happy, happy!!!

HAVE A WONDERFUL WEEK-END!

Tickled Pink Peonies is the daily newbie in Flower Mound Studio, finished in about an hour this evening. Next on the easel: a new design for my 29 Dresses Collection! Tomorrow morning my monthly art newsletter hits the stands with the name of the winner of a full day's private lesson. Thank you so much to everyone who entered! With over 250 notes and entries to read, it was tough to pick just one winner. Fortunately, I'll have a bunch more giveaways coming up over the next months, so don't despair if you didn't win this time!

Winter Peonies in Pink and White by Floral Artist Nancy Medina

Winter Peonies in Pink and White

Winter Peonies is the newest painting in Flower Mound Studio, I had to get these flowers painted as quickly as possible because peonies have a little blooming clock attached to them that ticks down to zero so quickly! These were closed up tight yesterday, but are super full today. If they hold in there just a few more days, I'll be able to coax a few more paintings from them. These fresh flowers were just one of my exciting acquisitions at the new market that just opened in Flower Mound - Market Street *sound of harps*. I also got a loaf of fresh bread and some cheese. I completely forgot about the eggs and milk, however. I blame the flowers. After all, they placed them right by the front door!

Little Breezy Red Poppies is the newest daily in Flower Mound Studio. I love mixing blues into my greens when I have flowers with warm colors. Pushing your greens into a cooler spectrum makes them pop against reds and fuschias and gives your whole painting a bit of kick. Tomorrow I head to my mother's house for a visit, and tamales are on the menu. My goal is to get her to eat and help booster her appetite a bit! Wish me luck!

Class Demonstration

20X16
Oil on Archival Panel

We painted poppies and daisies on the final day of my North Texas workshop. With buckets and buckets of flowers to choose from, I grabbed the best from the lot, even the tulips held out for four days - so this bouquet was a bit of a fruit salad of bright color, with lots of reds to ring in the holiday season. Tomorrow morning I'll be at the UPS store when they open to send four new paintings to new homes, since my shippers have assured me the lines will be out the door! Perhaps I should head over now and set up a tent with a little footheater to be first in line...

Wake Up Call Sunflowers and Delphiniums and a North Texas Workshop by Nancy Medina

Wake Up Call Sunflowers was my class demonstration this morning in North Texas. We've had a fun class, I get the sense everyone is excited about Christmas coming up, and vacations coming up, and seeing family. The ladies in my group have bonded so quickly and so completely. It amazes me to watch a group of new artists come together and instantly discover they have so much in common. I suppose we are all on the same wavelength, after all! It's a beautiful thing!

Little Wonder Stargazer by Floral Artist Nancy Medina

 Little Wonder Stargazer
by Nancy Medina

Little Wonder Stargazer is one of a new collection of small dailies in my gallery this month, and it's been a busy week in Flower Mound Studio. Today was the first day of the last workshop of the year here in North Texas, and I was honored to have a student travel from Kazakhstan to paint with me! Doris said this was her vacation this year, and she had planned the dates strategically. I think she was a bit surprised at how cold it was here last night, but today the sun came out to welcome her and the snow and ice began melting, finally, in earnest. It was interesting to hear how difficult (and at times impossible) it is to get art supplies shipped to you, if you live in Kazakhstan. Most items are simply turned away by customs altogether, so art supplies are very hard to come by. I'll never complain about a late order from Dick Blick again! Tomorrow we will paint red carnations and sunflowers, so stay tuned for more paintings to come!

White rose Rebellion is the newest floral still life in Flower Mound Studio, and the paints, brushes, palette, easel and buckets and buckets of fresh flowers are packed and ready for my final workshop for 2013 which kicks off tomorrow. I enjoyed painting this bouquet so much, laying the hot pink buds near the aqua blue vase created a nice color pop. This is the great new vase I purchased a few weeks ago when my husband and I went furniture shopping. It appears that furniture stores get the first choice on all the best vases! So next time you're in the craft store vase shopping and nothing strikes your fancy, try one of the furniture store chains. You might be really surprised!

Barefoot Garden Geraniums is a detail from the larger work finished yesterday evening. It's been a regular flower painting factor since Friday, since the pugs and I are iced in and house-bound. Thanks to a large supply of flavored coffees and creamers, Christmas cookies, and paints up to my elbows, the production line has been going non-stop! Read more...

Berries and Sunshine Sunflowers is the newest painting in Flower Mound Studio, as I pack up for another workshop next week! I know it's a bit odd to be painting sunflowers in the midst of a record breaking ice storm and well into the Christmas season, but I could not resist the warm color.

This doesn't mean I'm not excited about the holidays, in fact, I gave away an original oil painting yesterday. I'm going to give away another tomorrow! You can get your name in the hat by checking out my Facebook fan page and sharing and commenting on the post at the top of the page.

My holiday sale begins this week on my Web site, just in time for the release of my newest video! The helpers and I have been studio bound for 2 days with the ice storm here in Texas, so new paintings are flying off the shelves left and right. Sadly, tragedy struck when.... Read more...

True Blue Hydrangeas and Sunflowers by Floral Artist Nancy Medina

True Blue Hydrangeas and Sunflowers
by Nancy Medina
18X18
Oil on Gallery Wrap Canvas

True Blue is the newest painting in Flower Mound Studio, as we brace ourselves for the coldest winter since the ill fated Dallas Super Bowl weather of some years ago. The pug helpers have been huddled on their pug-ur-pedic mattresses around the radiant foot heaters all day. I felt absolutely sinful by taking a few hours off from the easel this morning to make another batch of Christmas cookies for our neighbors and friends. I can't remember what it is like to have a few weeks when I am not traveling, packing boxes for workshops to ship across the country, and having a suitcase always in the midst of being filled up. The ice storm, like the flu, has forced me to stop and smell the roses, or rather, smell the holiday cookies baking! Both equally pleasant prospects...! I really hope wherever you have, you are warm and dry and you have enough electricity to have the luxury of making cookies, or perhaps just a nice batch of steamy hot chocolate with extra whippy creme on top!

Red Hollyhocks and New Art Videos by Floral Artist Nancy Medina

My new introduction video is out (the part where I say howdy), and my first two instructional videos are scheduled for production. Thank you so much to those who have been waiting  patiently for some time. You may recall my first attempts at amateur filming in the studio, the interesting interjection of unfortunate pug noises and the story of Hubby as Director. (Okay married ladies, we all know that was a hazardous role reversal). To make a long story short, if you want a job done right, finished ahead of schedule, and completed on an exacting and professional level, hire a woman!

Just as a bit of a teaser, here's a taste of things to come. Enjoy and stay tuned here to my art newsletter for the first instructional video to come!

Little Dream White Tulip
by Nancy Medina
Oil on Gallery Wrap Canvas

The studio easel has earned its weight in cookies today, assisting with a large tulip painting, a commissioned hydrangea still life, and a pink poppy triptych this evening. It's been a regular flower factory around here! I'm washing the brushes early and starting on a batch of my favorite Christmas cookies. I make these every year for my neighbors and for my husband's coworkers. It's important to sample at least three to four cookies from each batch prepared prior to gifting, for quality assurance purposes. I hold these cookies solely responsible for the 5 to 10 pounds I gain every single holiday. Visit my art bloggy for the recipe for these super simple, super yummy cookies. Thanks Betty! Enjoy!

White Tulip Dreamscape by Floral Artist Nancy Medina

 White Tulip Dreamscape
by Nancy Medina

White Tulip Dreamscape is the newest work in the studio today. I love these wide format paintings, they look great over lintels, mantels and flat screen TVs, too! The hubby put up holiday lights and the Christmas tree today while I was in the studio working on a commission. Afterward, I noticed he had put the house lights on the tree, and the tree lights on the house. I doubt the decoration police are going to give us a citation for this, so I refrained from mentioning the slight mixup...  Having the tree up, however, poses a central problem - there are no Christmas cookies in the house yet! Tomorrow's project, snowball cookies. Stay tuned to my art bloggy, I'll share the recipe with you. It's my absolute favorite.

Rain Blossom Red Poppies and Santa Barbara Culture Shock by Floral Artist Nancy Medina

Rain Blossom Red Poppies ~ Detail

It was a busy day in Flower Mound Studio, a trip over the river and through the woods (literally!) to visit mom, putting up the  Christmas tree, and finding an excellent way to eliminate those leftover turkey blues by making Turkey Cheese Sour Creme enchiladas! Tomorrow I will be working on a large commission for one of my favorite Santa Barbara, California, clients whose Mother has requested another of my hydrangea paintings for her home, a partner to one she received a few years ago. The only thing that would make this project better is if I could deliver the painting to her in person, and visit this coastal California town I lived in when I was the editor of a group of veterinary magazines years ago. I did not know at the time that landing a "real" job in Santa Barbara was tantamount to winning a small lottery jackpot, since so many folks would give their eye teeth to live in this idyllic, palm tree festooned, mini paradise framed by beach on one side and rolling hills on the other. Someday I'll tell you the travails of this small town Texas gal who moved to Southern California and tried sometimes successfully, and sometimes disastrously, to fit into an entirely different culture. Suffice to say that inviting my new friends to bring their bathing suits so we could sit in my roommates' hot tub was my first major faux pas. You see, no one had ever been expected to actually WEAR bathing suits in the hot tub until I arrived on the scene. Fortunately there was a happy ending to this story...having met my hubby there and brought him home to Texas with me. But that's a tale for another day!
