Dragonfly by Suzy Pal Powell

One more little Camper for the October Workshop! This is 8x10 stretched canvas.
These are fun to do but hard! Especially the smaller ones.  The small ones are harder to do because of such small pieces.

Grandmother's Porch by Suzy Pal Powell

This is another poured painting.   I did this same painting years ago and wanted to try pouring it.
It takes some thinking to know which to pour first, what to cover up, etc. When I got ready to remove the miskit, the whole sheet was covered.
It is a little larger than 1/2 sheet.

Keri's Jacks

I still have Keri's Jacks and Kenley's Marbles they played with when they were little.
This was a fun poured painting.  I put them on a piece of watercolor paper and set them in the late afternoon sun to get the shadows.

Past Life

I could not think of a name for this painting.  For years I sewed every day, making all our clothes as well as sewing for the public.  One day, I stopped. The thought of sewing is not anything I enjoy thinking about.  I found these old wooden spools that I still had and thought they might make a good set up.  The cloth under them is from a wedding gift...50 years ago. It is colorful cut-work that was on pillowcases.  Cut work is very time consuming and hard.  It takes hours and hours to hand stitch the designs.  This is 6x6 oil on gessobord.  This is Available.

Bird Nests by Suzy Pal Powell

I am still painting each day.
These are 6x6 oil on gessobord. I hope to paint some larger at some point but right now, these are working for practice! I sold a couple, and had a couple of commissions.
The bird nests I found in our yard.
They are amazing! They find all colors of strings and twine, and tie it to the twigs. Is unreal! I can't even imagine how long it must take! Two of these are Oriole nests. The small nest is so fragile. Looks as if she found some roots to something and put them all together. It has a lot of cotton in it too. It blows my mind at how soft both these nests are inside. So cozy for their little babies!

This nest is on a 6x8 gessobord.
The last painting 'Blue Dishes' was done on 6x6 also. I found these blue dishes at Hobby Lobby and had to have one for set ups.  They had cups and small little dishes to match.
These are all listed on Daily Paintworks for sale.

28 Days in February -Suzy Pal Powell

The 30 days of January went by pretty fast! I am going to try to keep doing a small painting each day. Not stop on 30, so this begins 28 days in February!
This is T-Bone, my daughters sweet little dog. It is painted with oil on an orange gessoboard.

The next one is our china cups. I painted it on a black gessobord, experimenting with different backgrounds. I really prefer red or orange.

The quail is painted on a black under painting also. We have been having blue quail come in the yard to eat. They are so pretty. This one was perched on an old chair that we have in the yard.

New North Light Books

I can't believe 2014 is almost gone.  It has been such a good year! All of our family is healthy and happy and we got a new Granddaughter-n-law this year.  We have been so blessed in every way.
I have had a good 'art' year! We got a new building for me to hang my work in as well as teach and share my love of painting and creating.  It has been so awesome having my own place to go out and teach! I don't have to load everything up, etc.  My little Backyard Gallery and Studio has been such a blessing.  I did the 30 day challenge in January and September as well as 2 online sketchbook classes.
Now to end the year, I have some news! Wow..a great year to end one and start another.

I got word today saying my mixed-media art has been selected for publication in
Incite 3: The Art of Storytelling, that is published by North Light Books.
The painting that was selected is  'Wyoming Cowboy', a torn paper collage. So to go along with 'Story Telling'... I met this cowboy in 2013 when I got to go to Wyoming for a week workshop.  We got to go out to his ranch, and I took photos of him off an on all week because of the way he dressed. He didn't look like our Texas Cowboys.  I loved his hat, and his silk scarves!
His family has been there close to Dubois, WY for generations.  We spent an afternoon there, and it was an awesome time seeing the corrals and barns that were made with logs.  John loved sharing his family's  home, and barns.  He wanted us to go through the house where he grew up. It was like it was when he was growing up. Just like someone still lived there.  That morning he tracked a bear by the corrals. I hope I get to go back again! It was such a great time, and wonderful memories!

Thank you all for your support and encouragement for the past years!
My prayer is that we will be all healthy and happy in 2015!
Happy New Year!

Joy to the World

Last year I did this drawing on my ipad, and decided I would use the drawing for a painting  this year.  The top one is done with watercolor.  When i got through Keri said you were supposed to do that with T-Bone hanging out the window. SO....i duplicated my ipad drawing (on my iPad,so i wouldn't loose the original idea) and erased the snowpeople in the back window, and the kid hanging out the window.  Then I added T-Bone, and the gifts showing through the back window. We ordered some from Vista Print, and I am so anxious to see if they print up nice! I still enjoy drawing on the ipad  but is harder than using a pencil!!

Kool-Aid Pie Sketch

I started another 6 weeks of Sketchbook Skool, and this is our first homework.
Sketch a recipe. I normally use the smaller 5x8 sketchbook, but I switched to an 8.5x11 and the pie crust GREW!  It got too big! Then I didn't have as much room for my finished pie, etc.
I normally draw with pen and ink, but did this in pencil first. I used watercolor and a little bit of gouache. It was fun, but very time consuming. You should try this recipe! It is very good, and you can use other flavors of kool aid.  Keri gave me this recipe a while back. You can make them in the little mini crusts too and they are so cute!

More Sketches-Suzy Pal Powell

I couldn't get the sparrows to stay still on the feeder! I had to look them up to get an idea of what they really look like and I still didn't capture them, but was fun.  I love the crows that I got in Wyoming sitting on the fence. I have done a couple of paintings of them. and the bird at the Atlanta Zoo was so gorgeous! sketching is such fun.

If you want to join us for my Sketching workshop, Sept. 12-13, let me know. There's still room!

Workshop in Plains,TX - Suzy 'Pal' Powell

This Friday and Saturday we had a great 2 day workshop. The first big workshop in my new building. I loved it! The students were from: Artesia New Mexico, Midland, Lubbock, and Plains. They all created something that they will enjoy for years!

We have set up another collage workshop for March 6,7 2015. Put on your calendar if you are interested. I only have room for 10-11 so I will need to know as soon as you can. It is $80 for both days.

Kathy, Rhonda Carol
Georgie, Mary George, Liz
Ruth Ann, Donna and Danielle

Also, September 12 -13,next month...
I am teaching a Sketchbook class. We will do some basic simple sketches and learn about sketchbooks and different tools we can use.  Also we will talk about making our own.  I am excited to do this because sketchbooks happen to be one of my favorite things to do! You do not need any experience, so don't worry about that part. It takes a while to learn to draw and this is a beginning if you have ever been interested. I have filled several sketchbooks over the years, and they are such fun to go back through.
The cost is $80 for both days. You mainly need a good sketchbook. This is a great brand--visual journal. They have watercolor, mixed media and smooth. I love them all. I watercolor my sketches, so this paper works really good. they have small and large. I would recommend the small to start with.  I draw strictly with ink, and that would be my advice to you also.  You can pick up a fountain pen, or a good ball point, etc. If you are worried about that, bring some pencils. colored pencils, etc.
I will make a better list in a few days. This 2 day workshop is $80 also.

There is a motel in Denver city, 15 miles away, and a new Holiday Inn 30 miles away in Brownfield.
The  B and B here is full.

first class in new Studio-Suzy Pal Powell

Friday we had our first class in the new building. Half of the students were either sick or gone, so our class was small but we had a lot of fun.
We painted a small still life of a quilt I made years ago. The pattern is the 'Fan' Quilt.   I love to paint fabric designs, etc. I finished just part of mine and cropped it down.  I now give away my demos, (we draw names) and Carol won this one!
I hope she enjoys it!

Cactus Sketches by Suzy Pal Powell

These are post card size sketches, then painted, on watercolor paper.  These small little paintings are fun to do. The first one is done ink, then watercolor.
