Miksang Photography Workshop - at The Dutch Art Gallery Dallas, TX with Miksang teacher and Contemporary Photographer Denise Bossarte, May 3rd and 4th
Contemplative Photography Level I Workshop
“While there is perhaps a province in which the photograph can tell us nothing more than what we see with our own eyes, there is another in which it proves to us how little our eyes permit us to see.” – Dorothea Lange
This
two-day workshop offers a unique opportunity experience a contemplative
practice using cameras as a way to expand how you see and interact with
the world.
In contemplative photography, we learn
to synchronize the eye and the mind, to be mindful of the present moment
without judging, reflecting, or thinking.
When the eye and the mind are in the
same place, the photographer/artist is simply observing the moment in
which they find themselves and they can discover and capture the
ordinary magic of the phenomenal world.
In Miksang, we are
working to “re-image” the way that you think, talk about, and practice
photography. This practice encourages you to look at your world in a new
way. No previous photography experience needed! No previous
contemplation experience needed!
Miksang helps to make
you more aware of the visual richness of ordinary objects and scenes and
helps to overcome biases and judgments about what is worth looking at
and photographing. You will work to heighten your awareness to the world
around you and you will begin to select and abstract from the visual
richness of your surroundings. With Miksang, you learn to experience the process of photography as a discipline and a source of insight.
The first day will begin with an introduction to the Miksang Contemplative practice and the Miksang “flash of perception”
exercise which is the foundational method for the contemplative
practice. There are several sessions during the first day consisting of
instructions, group shooting of specific assignments, and image reviews
by the teacher in a group setting.
The second day is in the same format with additional assignments, group shoots and teacher reviews.
“The voyage of discovery is not in seeking new landscapes but in having new eyes.” – Marcel Proust.
