Contemporary Impressionist Landscape Painting, “Dressed in Green” By Passionate Purposeful Painter Holly Hunter Berry

 

As a child growing up I lived in a city in Pennsylvania and I don’t remember ever seeing palm trees. I’m fascinated by them and as a kid I always thought of them representing fun, carefree times, moving gracefully in the summer breezes. As an adult living in Texas all these years (barely remember living anywhere else!) I don’t have to go far to see palms...palms are common in my area . No matter, they still hold a place in my heart saved for dreams and a desire to relax under the summer sun and breezes coming off the water. (Yes , I know what an imagination! Houston’s palms are located anywhere and often in concrete shopping centers!) As a result of my fascination with them I of course have to paint them! I absolutely love the options they have for so many colors! (Yes, there goes my imagination again! Lol!) With this painting I tried to stay closer to the green family but often you will see me adding violet, magenta, orange, etc.! I think we can all use a bit of imagination and a splash of color! I’m grateful for my eyes to be able to see and enjoy these happy plants/trees! Make it colorful! ❤️

Contemporary Impressionist Landscape Painting, Cow, “Hanging Out With Mom” By Passionate Purposeful Painter Holly Hunter Berry

 

Any moms out there? I am so grateful to be a mom and although my son is no longer "little" I just love when we get to hang out! While visiting with friends I watched these two and they just reminded me of fun times with my own child. The years go by so quickly and those many seasons of motherhood are very special to me. With this painting I wanted to show a mom and child just being in the moment, hanging out, being content with each other...a peaceful moment, "Hanging Out With Mom"! Enjoy!

Recently, I was commissioned by a new collector to paint the house that his wife grew up in Alaska. Surrounded by tons of acreage in this gorgeous winter wonderland, I love how the house has the perfect view of this commanding vista. I feel so honored that I got to create something so personal for their anniversary, and that she can enjoy childhood memories every time she gazes into my painting.

I painted "Exploring the Woods" on a beautiful fall day at one of my favorite spots near our home. The brilliant gold and tangerine leaves were glowing from the sun backlighting them, and the gnarly tree trunks were forming an intricate web that I just had to capture. Painted with palette knife and thick oil paint, this landscape is filled with tons of texture, color, movement and energy!

I painted this scene from the Dallas Arboretum on location recently when the weather was beautiful and the spring buds were in full bloom. I love tulips being one of the first flowers to announce that winter has officially ended, so I focused on these colorful red and white striped ones in the foreground, which contrast so well against the complimentary green leaves and grasses. I also liked how their height leads you back into the distant flower beds and onto the Degolyer house in the background, so I chose this vertical panorama format to accentuate that feeling. Loaded with thick oil paint, texture and movement, I hope you can feel the joy that spring is in the air!

Painted on location, I set up my easel in front of these prolific azalea bushes along Turtle Creek near my home. The vibrant pinks and fuchsia were so full of life set against the cool green leaves, that I wanted to capture not only that vivid spring color but also the elegant sycamore tree in the distance with its speckled white bark.  Contrasting the height of the vertical tree against the horizontal blooms, I chose this vertical panoramic canvas, and repeating shapes throughout creates a harmony to the overall scene. Painted with palette knife and lots of texture, I hope you can feel the beauty and energy of a perfect spring day.

I painted these cheerful tulips from life in my backyard garden. With all of our rain this year, I had a bumper crop and wanted to capture the joy I felt seeing them signaling that winter was finally over and spring had begun! Created with palette knife and thick paint, this piece is bursting with color and texture. Blurring out the background, you can focus on each individual flower. Creating a circular composition within the square format creates a harmony and flow, while unblended diagonal marks add to the energy and happiness of the moment. I hope these tulips brighten your day and lift your spirits, too.

Painted on location in Glen Rose, Texas with the company of my Outdoor Painters Society, I chose to paint the oldest house in town. It was so full of character and charm and I loved the big huge front porch and white-washed picket fence. The pergola welcomes you to step right in and relax on a rocking chair, visiting with neighbors and loved ones. Dramatic lighting and shadows add to the warmth of the moment.

I painted these water tanks and grain mill in the distance recently in Grapevine, TX on a bright, crisp winter morning. I loved the colorful rust contrasting against the blue-grays of the metal containers, and I worked with thick layers of oil paint and my palette knife to capture that texture. The whole scene had an industrial feel to it, so I chose to include the telephone pole and wires in the foreground to set that feel and also lead you into the scene. Adding a touch of whimsy to an otherwise hardened scene, I like the play of recent man made touches juxtaposed against 19th and 20th century modern technology.

I painted "Resting Spot" on location in East Texas amongst the piney woods. This scene was so peaceful and I liked how the evergreens provided shade, keeping the warm Texas sun at bay. One lone boat sits on the shoreline, inviting you to sit down and row across the tranquil lake. I hope this piece transports you to a quiet weekend escape, surrounded by nature, with not a care in the world.

Just Sold! I created "Exploring the Woods II" on another beautiful day this fall at one of my favorite painting spots near our home. The kaleidoscope of autumn colors was ablaze, and I was attracted to the dappled light sneaking through small gaps in the forested canopy, illuminating the winding path and brilliant grasses below. Playing off of the diagonal shadows on the ground and the zig zag arrangement of the trunks, I feel like the patterns create a kind of rhythm, adding to the sounds in the woods in this canvas. Painted with palette knife and thick oil paint, this landscape is filled with color, movement and energy!

Just Sold! Painted on location at Lee Park in Dallas, I loved how the irises signaled that spring was in full bloom. Standing tall, anchoring this corner of the creek these purple blooms lead your eye up through the canvas, along the water's edge to the stone bridge in the distance. The soft light adds to the peacefulness of this tranquil spot, and I hope all of your cares are transported away while lifting your spirits.
