Mixed Media, Contemporary Painting, “Epic and Elegy” by Texas Contemporary Artist Sharon Whisnand

Gesso was applied heavily and randomly on the canvas before painting to add texture and interest. Three colors of paint were used, along with alcohol sprayed and paint moved to give a "ghostly" appearance.

Abstract Art, Contemporary Painting, “Wandering” by Texas Contemporary Artist Sharon Whisnand

An original abstract painting called Wandering. As I looked at this painting I could visualize wandering around through the colors and shapes. These have become some of my current favorite colors.

Expressionism, Contemporary Painting, Mixed Media Art, “Energy” by Texas artist Sharon Whisnand

This is an "energetic" acrylic painting with a lot of texture and color. Sometimes paintings come together easily and sometimes they don't. I love using gesso before beginning a painting for a couple of reasons - to create an underlying texture and to give "tooth" and to scribble or press items into the wet gesso to create underlying patterns. This painting has splatters, colors of turquoise, yellow, orange and a deep burgundy. Drywall tape (the kind with little holes) was used to create additional raised texture, then some heavier acrylic was slung across and dripped down. A very fun and energetic painting was created.

Contemporary Art, Mixed Media,Expressionism “Hidden Figure” by Texas Contemporary Artist Sharon Whisnand

A very mysterious painting with many techniques. Layers of acrylics were allowed to drip down the painting, lots of texture and pastel stencils, some asemic writing and, with some imagination, a figure can be imagined emerging.
