He Knows My Favorite Color

These yellow roses were part of a gorgeous bouquet my husband gave me on our anniversary this past Friday. They are the prettiest butter yellow. Setting up this composition, I put the light source pretty close and they became dazzlingly brilliant to my eyes. The color seemed to radiate from within, out into the very air around them. I think it gives them a kind of dreamy effect - very romantic. My sweetheart knows I am nuts about flowers, especially roses. He also knows my favorite color of rose -- it changes depending on the one I'm looking at that moment!

Untamed Summer Beauty

in the early stages...

This summer has been very busy and I've let my yard run a little wild. I went out back early in the morning to check on things the other day and the weeds were going nuts, so I wrangled my kids to help me out with the weeding and pruning. We cleared it up a little, but it may take me all fall to catch up. Loaded with an armful of rose clippings, salvia and flowering vines, I headed to my studio to take advantage of the untamed beauty.

Love these Heirloom garden roses I found at the market! The way the petals curl inward toward the center is so charming. I put them in this footed glass bowl which perfectly shows them off. I am keeping ice cubes in their water, so they won't open up too fast (warm water makes them open up sooner) and hopefully I will be able paint them for several more days.
